Reviews…Reviews… January 29, 2006

Writing reviews is not my style…not what I do…but what the hell must give credit when its due…First when I heard the name Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the first thing that came to my mind was the rip off that he made…if you guys didnt know, it was Aks…a scene by scene rip off from the mindblowing original – The Fallen….So as you can see I didnt have a lot of respect for the guy…the only reason why I thought I would give his latest flick a shot was ofcourse A R Rahman….most of them listen to his songs but I listen to his background scores…so kinda had to see the movie….like everyone, I was blown away by the freshness in the songs….wanted to see if it was done justice on the screen….Now coming to the whole reason why I thought I shld write this…give the man the respect cause we have a winner here…I cant tell you how much higher the bar is set now for Hindi movies now….Even after this if skin flicks like Murder and the whole bunch of crap movies become hits…then what can I say….God save us….I am not going to talk abt any particular scene or the performance of any particular artist as everyone is brilliant…and also honestly its not abt them….its much more than that which you will realise when you watch it….I saw ppl crying during the movie which is rare for a Hindi movie….atleast has been a while….If you want to see more movies like this, you shld go and watch this on theater cause otherwise dont blame them for making crappy movies later on….and by the way the movie we are talking abt is Rang De Basanti…go watch it…I know I am going again before it leaves town….

What else can we geeks talk abt other than google when there is a rumor of a google “cube” coming out…I have always loved google for their no nonsense applications and for their motto of do no evil…but at one point last year they got me questioning thier creative ability….hold on, dont judge me so fast…having launched their maps tool, they started using their APIs to create some rather dumb applications…..for example, they had a map showing the locations of cab companies when u search for them….I mean, why would you need their location…wouldnt it be sufficient to just have their phone numbers?!…its not like you are going to walk to the nearest location and take a cab….never did understand the idea behind that…i guess I never will…they are now acting like the company we all grew to hate – Microsoft…the one thing i hated microsoft for is that they just had money and they would buy whoever was intelligent enough to create something worth while and not to forget include the bugs that never existed ;)…but when I hear google recently has been doing the same thing, I am heart-broken…is the google we all loved changing their outlook now….they bought a image search company….they bought picasa…what happened to the days when they invested in brand new efficient ideas to provide us with tools….I guess they have grown to a size that they really dont care abt what ppl think…i hope they get back to their basics and not venture into uncharted territory just by buying third party stuff…by the way, I still love google ;)…
Casinos Vs Stock Market January 1, 2006

are they the same beast in different disguises….maybe…maybe not…but I think both are additive and can take ur money away…and i guess thats were the similarities end…I believe or I shld say learnt to believe that world favours the bravest…and mind you, its bravest, not stupid…i guess we are at a point of life where we know the difference ;)…its all abt how much money you are ready to lose…or in other words..how much you wont mind losing to get more, which you wont necessarily need anyways but wont mind having…so i guess the most important part is not how much you make out of our “gamble” but where you draw the line of how much you can live without…but then, if its so clear then why do ppl end up losing all that they own in gambling or in the market…now dont tell me there arent many like that but..cause u know there are a bunch and i dont know if they have a name for it already like lactose intolerant….who knows…you never know….but then thats what seperates brave from the stupid….so at the end of it, I guess stock market is a better place to lose than in a casino, cause for one…hmmm…ur odds are better to make some money and two…you are much more sober when trying to read the company financials than when you are trying to pray for a dice in a house of smoke…so go ahead take some risks and may all end well…peace..
99cents too expensive for music? January 1, 2006

First and foremost, a very happy new year to one and all…now to the topic of interest…when itunes first came out, ppl were going crazy with the money they had to shell out to own an “authentic” music collection….credit to their marketing and innovative ideas…but there was a always a thought that bothered me…who exactly made the rules….how can you impose on the whole world for such a trivial issue of selling music….I mean its not like the NPT, which by the way, they are having issues with already implementing it….and its definitely not like the US calling itself the “World” champions if they participate in a competition involving more than two ppl….so how do you make a common rule…does there exist one already that says 99cents is THE cheapest price if you wanted to have “authentic” music…I was not going to buy into the fact that its the case ’cause some fruit company said so….so anyways…here i bumped into something that ma have answered my questions….in Russia, they dont give a damn and their rules for music business is something completely outta da world…http://www.allofmp3.com is the answer..the concept there is, they charge 2cents/mb or something like that and guess what they won the law suit against the music industry…so you can get the whole album for 99cents instead of a song…now thats what I am talking abt..more value for your every cent spent….so go ahead and have urself a blast and I am sure you will love it once you use it…
